It can be hard to find a stylist or space that fits and where you feel empowered to ask for exactly what you want. At MAL, our goal is to provide hair services that make our clients feel seen, understood, and more like themselves.

We provide affirming haircut, haircolor, and hairloss services in a safe and inclusive private Boulder space. MAL is comprised of independent creatives that serve the hair needs of the local LGBTQIA+ and Ally community.

Studio Policies
Age Restriction
We can provide haircut & color services to individuals 13 years and older, however we do not allow unaccompanied minors in the studio. Please note that our studio is decorated with art that can contain mature subjects.
We can provide paramedical tattoo services to individuals 18 years and older.
Safety
Hate speech is not welcome or tolerated here. We reserve the right to deny service to individuals, especially those who do not respect our Queer space. The safety of our Queer artists & Queer clientele is our top-priority.
Stressfree Payment
We are a gratuity-free studio. Our prices reflect fair compensation for our artists. If you’d like to give extra, consider sponsoring a haircut for someone in need.
We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Credit/Debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, AfterPay, MAL eGift Cards and exact cash. Full payment is collected at the end of your service and we’ll text you your receipt. (The credit card required at the time of booking will only be charged in the event of a cancellation/no show.)
Refunds
We don’t accept refunds on hair services or products, however, we want all clients to feel happy with their experience so we offer complementary adjustments and styling sessions – please contact us within 2 weeks from your service.
Cancellations
You can cancel or reschedule your appointment online anytime up to 1 day before at no cost. Cancelling your appointment within 24 hours of your appointment time, arriving more than 15 minutes late, or missing your appointment will incur our cancellation fee to cover the stylist’s time. The cancellation fee is 100% of the service cost charged to the credit card used to schedule.
Variable Charges
We have transparent pricing down to the variable product charge – priced by the gram of haircolor used for your custom color service.

Parking
MAL is located within the Boulder Steelyards. The main entrance is on 30th Street and we're situated next to Safelite Autoglass. Take advantage of free 2-hour parking in the lot directly in front of our studio. A wheelchair-accessible ramp is located to the east of the main entrance.
We recommend allocating at least 10 minutes for parking. -
Private Bathroom
MAL has an ADA accessible private single user all-gender bathroom.

BIPOC Sliding Scale
Boulder, Colorado exists on native hinono’eino’ biito’owu’ (Arapaho), Tséstho’e (Cheyenne) and Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) land – and like in many places, indigenous and other communities of color aren’t always afforded the same opportunities here.
To help support that community, some of our artists offer sliding scale rates across their services for BIPOC (Black and/or Indigenous People of Color) clients. This discounted rate is provided to help reduce the barriers of access available to communities of color. We respectively ask that you only use these rates if you are a person-of-color.
- 15% off: I am letting my community support me and I am helping the stylist support themselves. Enter BIPOC15 in your appointment notes.
- 25% off: I am letting my community support me and I am helping the stylist cover operating costs. Enter BIPOC25 in your appointment notes.
- 35% off: I am letting my community support me. Enter BIPOC35 in your appointment notes. -
Communication
Live transcribe and translation accommodations are available for all appointment services via the Hearing Helper or Google Translate apps.
We also offer a Silent Service option in which the Stylist will refrain from conversation after your consult.

Service Sensitivities
Haircuts and other hair services may be overwhelming for some individuals, so we offer complementary face masks & ear plugs for all clients. We also have a range of stimming toys available for clients to fidget with during their service, ability to use & charge your electronic devices, and a fragrance-free Shampoo & Conditioner option on deck.
